Upcycled Angels Taking Flight to #doDifferent

Recycling isn’t just about reducing waste; it’s also about creating a more sustainable future for animals. The materials we recycle often end up in landfills, contributing to habitat destruction and pollution that can harm wildlife. There's a special kind of magic happening in Matzikama. It involves a dedicated group of women, a whole lot of upcycled coffee pods, and a fierce determination to make a difference for animals in need. Meet the Angel Project, a registered Non-Profit Company that's become a beacon of hope for countless furry friends.

Founded in 2023 by Janine Storman-van Zyl, The Angel Project was a direct response to the lack of animal welfare resources in Matzikama. With the nearest SPCA a staggering 200 kilometers away, Janine knew action was needed. Countless animals were neglected, abused, and struggling to survive.

This inspiring group of women warriors tackled the challenge head-on, not just with compassion, but with creativity. Their secret weapon? Used Nespresso pods. By transforming these everyday discards into stunning "Angels of Hope" – think angel figurines, ornaments, and more – they found a sustainable way to fund their lifesaving work.

The Angel Project goes far beyond crafting beautiful keepsakes. They use the funds raised to provide essential veterinary care, including sterilisations, vaccinations, deworming, and flea and tick treatments. But their commitment doesn't stop there. They understand that animal welfare is a multi-faceted issue.

  • Education is Key: Regular educational outreach programs empower pet owners to become better caregivers.

  • Full Bellies, Happy Hearts: A robust feeding program sustains dogs, cats, and even chickens, providing crucial nourishment for animals whose owners face financial hardship.

  • Homespun Havens: Recognising the plight of animals forced to sleep outside, the Angel Project constructs eco-friendly kennels from reclaimed wood and recycled materials, offering a safe and cozy haven. They also build cat shelters and feeding stations for feral colonies.

The Angel Project is constantly seeking ways to expand their impact. This summer, they're tackling the challenge of water scarcity with a project to create water stations from recycled plumbing pipes. They're also gearing up for a festive season filled with even more creative coffee pod creations – think giant angels, baubles, and bells!

The Angel Project's success isn't solely based on their own tireless efforts. The Matzikama community has embraced this cause wholeheartedly. From participating in monthly fundraisers – markets, dances, brunches, dinners – to creative initiatives like clay dog and cat earrings by a local artist, the spirit of collective action is alive and well.

The Angel Project's story is a testament to the power of community, resourcefulness, and unwavering love for animals. Whether you donate, spread the word, or simply marvel at their upcycled creations, you can be a part of their mission to create a brighter future for Matzikama's furry (and feathered) friends.
