Transforming Lives to #doDifferent

In many homes in South Africa, pets are a common sight to behold. Whether they are the furry friend, a lifelong companion, a guard dog or a four-legged family member - we want to do right by them by caring for and loving them during their lifetimes. That's why this week, we are looking at a company that pledges to make a difference in your pet’s life, as well as the lives of pets that have yet to find their forever homes.

Hill’s was started by Dr Mark Morris, an exceptional vet, who believed that we should take pet healthcare as seriously as our own. Seeing the link between poor nutrition and illness in pets, he developed a pet food that was superior to any other on the market.

The turning point for Hill’s came when Dr Morris met a blind man called Morris Frank and his beloved guide dog, Buddy, who was suffering from kidney disease. Dr Morris knew that because many of the commercial pet foods available at the time were high in phosphorus and protein to make them taste better, feeding them could harm the kidneys. So, he set about developing food that was low in salt yet high in flavour and nutritional value. This food became Hill's Prescription Diet k/d™, which went on to become the first commercially available Hill's pet food. It helped Morris and Buddy enjoy many more happy years together.

This led to Hill’s mission, which is to help enrich and lengthen the special relationships between people and their pets. They believe all animals - from your pet to the companion animals we care for - should be loved and cared for during their lifetimes. That's why they proudly produce pet food that can make a difference in your pet's life. With a team of more than 220 veterinarians, nutritionists and food scientists, Hill’s develop nutrition that’s driven by pets’ needs, to help give them the best life possible.

Hill’s believes that the right nutrition can transform how a pet feels, looks and acts. That’s why they implemented the Hill’s Food, Shelter & Love program. This program provides science-led nutrition to over a hundred shelters across South Africa and Namibia, to help give shelter pets the second chance they deserve. Some of the shelters that they support include Woodrock Animal Rescue, AACL and Tears Animal Rescue. Since 2002, they have supported shelter animals by ensuring those pets eat precisely balanced nutrition. The result? A growing number of happy, healthy pets going home every year.

At Hill’s, they also believe every pet needs a human and every human needs a pet but finding that perfect match can be quite tricky. That’s why they have made it easier than ever with their Hill’s Pet Matchmaker app. Whether you want a CEO of the couch or an olympic athlete, a blond or a brunette, or a Labby cross, trying to find your best friend or soulmate is as simple as a swipe. You can filter based on animal type, age, energy level, etc, which makes finding the perfect pet for you and your family trouble-free. The pets on the app are available at their partner shelters if you would like to meet and greet your new friend before bringing them home.

So the next time you are looking for a new furry friend, why not try the Hill’s Pet Matchmaker app and rescue one from a beloved shelter? Or if you are looking to try a new pet food, look no further than a food created to help pets live long, healthy lives.
