The Thread of Hope to #doDifferent

If there’s one thing we love at aDifferentLife, it’s a story where #doDifferent creates a ripple effect of hope. Today, we’re stepping into the heart of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands to share the story of Tsonga - a brand that proves a pair of shoes can be so much more than leather and thread.

In the late 1990s, the South African footwear industry was facing a crisis. Cheap imports were flooding the market, and local factories were closing their doors. While most saw a dying industry, Tsonga’s founder, Peter Maree, saw an opportunity to do things differently.

He envisioned a niche market for high-quality, hand-stitched leather footwear with a uniquely African soul. But he didn't look to industrial hubs; he looked to the village of Lidgetton.

The "DNA" of a Tsonga shoe is defined by the Thread of Hope Farm. What was once an abandoned school building was transformed into a training center where women from the local rural community gathered to learn the artisanal skill of hand-stitching.

This isn't just about manufacturing; it's about empowerment.

  • Job Creation: At a time when employment was scarce, Tsonga created a sustainable ecosystem for local artisans.

  • Skill Development: By teaching specialized leather craftsmanship, they provided a trade that could support families for generations.

  • Fair Wages: As part of their "Be Better" commitment, Tsonga has made it a moral obligation to pay their employees above the national minimum wage, acknowledging that every cent matters in a country with high unemployment.

Tsonga is refreshingly honest: they don’t claim to be perfect, but they are committed to being better every day. This philosophy touches every part of their business, from the way they source their materials to how they treat the earth.

For starters, they focus on Sustainability by sourcing leather from Gold and Silver status members of the Leather Working Group (LWG), ensuring strict environmental compliance. They also prioritise Waste Reduction, getting creative by turning fabric marketing materials into handbag carriers and actively phasing out single-use plastics. Perhaps most importantly, they maintain Local Loyalty by continuing to manufacture in the heart of the Midlands, even as the brand has expanded to international retailers.

"A rising tide lifts all boats." This philosophy, borrowed from JFK, is the heartbeat of Tsonga. They believe that if the brand succeeds, the community of Lidgetton should rise with it.

When you wear a pair of Tsongas, you aren't just wearing "slow fashion"—you’re wearing a collaboration of passionate people. From the "clicking" (cutting the leather) to the final hand-stitch that provides that signature flexibility and comfort, each pair represents a life changed.

It’s about making a positive difference in society, one step at a time. And in our books, that is exactly what it means to #doDifferent.
