Seeds and Second Chances that #doDifferent

It's always amazing when a simple idea can sprout into something that genuinely changes lives and helps the planet. That's exactly what's happening in South Africa with a company called Growing Paper. They're not just making paper; they're sowing the seeds of change, one recycled sheet at a time.

The story of Growing Paper began with a simple observation: the amount of stationery wasted at a single wedding. Founders Roxanne Schumann and Nileta Knoetzen saw an opportunity to do something different. In 2010, they started with second-hand papermaking equipment and a vision to create something truly sustainable. They began making greeting cards and gift tags from post-consumer waste paper, embedding them with seeds. The idea was simple but revolutionary: use the card, then plant it to grow flowers, herbs, or vegetables.

Their journey wasn't just about creating a product; it was about building a business with heart. They’ve grown from that small idea into a team of over 30 permanently employed individuals from their local community. They provide not just jobs but a living salary, ongoing training, and life skills workshops. For them, it's about seeing people and their families "bloom."

Growing Paper’s mission goes far beyond its products. The process itself is a testament to their commitment to sustainability and community. They collect post-consumer waste paper from local schools and businesses, ensuring no new trees are harmed in the process. Their paper is 100% recycled, biodegradable, and handmade using a chemical-free process—just water, old paper, seeds, and "love."

They also collaborate with incredible South African artists, printing their unique work on the seeded paper. By doing so, they provide a platform for local talent while creating beautiful, purpose-driven products. Artists like Petro van der Merwe, Julia "Juj in Motion" Rolle, and the creative team LaTu are all part of the Growing Paper family, using their art to tell a story of conservation and connection to nature.

Every product sold has the potential to make a difference. The seeds used in their paper are high-quality and tested to ensure they germinate. From indigenous fynbos to herbs and vegetables, each sheet holds the promise of new life. The company estimates that if every product they sell is planted, more than 26 million new plants will sprout each year.

Growing Paper is a beautiful example of how a business can be a force for good. They’re building a sustainable future by reducing waste, creating jobs, and collaborating with local artists. They’ve shown that by doing something different, we can all contribute to a world that's a little greener and a lot more full of hope.
