A Mission Beyond Medicine to #doDifferent
Easter is often defined by the quiet moments spent with family and the shared joy of a holiday tradition, but for many in South Africa, the season is a poignant reminder of the gap between celebration and necessity. It is a time that calls for a deeper kind of reflection—one that moves beyond the chocolate and the festivities toward a spirit of genuine compassion. True generosity isn't just about the act of giving; it’s about recognising our shared humanity and stepping up to ensure that those in our most vulnerable communities are not forgotten. This year, the spirit of "giving back" took on a tangible, heartwarming form, proving that when we lead with heart, even the smallest gesture can create a ripple of hope.

At Craig View Veterinary Clinic, the team is used to a high-pressure environment. On any given morning, Dr. Clifford Bull and his staff might be performing a complex cruciate repair or tending to an exotic patient in their state-of-the-art Boksburg facility. But once a year, the focus shifts from the operating table to the community table, as the clinic swaps its stethoscopes for bunny ears.
What started in 2018 as a small goal to give back to the humans of the East Rand has just concluded another chapter in one of the region’s most heartwarming annual traditions: the Craig View Easter Egg Charity Drive.
The initiative was born from a simple but powerful realisation. While the clinic is dedicated to animal welfare—assisting with sterilisation campaigns and wildlife emergencies—Dr. Bull felt a calling to bridge the gap between the veterinary profession and the community.

"As veterinarians, we are often seen as essential service providers... but do they know us as humans?" Dr. Bull reflects. This drive was his answer. It’s about reaching out to those who are often overlooked: children in oncology units, the elderly in care homes, and families living in local informal settlements.
The success of this year’s project has been nothing short of "egg-straordinary." As the final boxes were tallied this past week, the sheer volume of generosity was overwhelming. From local businesses and schools to everyday pet owners who dropped off a box after a consultation, the community answered the call to spread a little "Awesome South Afri-CAN" spirit.
The impact is tangible. Over the years, the clinic has distributed over R1.5 million worth of Easter treats. This year, the addition of non-perishable food items meant that the clinic wasn't just bringing a smile to faces for the holiday—they were helping to stock pantries, recognising that for many in South Africa, the need for a basic meal is just as urgent as the need for a holiday treat.

Sometimes, it’s the smallest gestures that carry the most weight. Throughout this year's drive, the team was moved by story after story of locals walking into the clinic with a single box of eggs and a massive smile, contributing whatever they could spare.
In a world where we often focus on big targets and tallying numbers, moments like these reset the perspective. As the Craig View team noted, "If we all just gave what we could, the world would be a very different place."
With the final drop-off deadline now behind us, the clinic is currently in the process of distributing the thousands of eggs and food parcels collected. It is a massive logistical effort, but for the team at Craig View, it is the most rewarding part of their year.

While the physical collection has concluded, the spirit of the project remains. The team’s commitment to community welfare serves as a powerful reminder that compassion shouldn't end at the clinic door. By stepping out of the theater and into the community, they are proving that being a "good vet" is about much more than just medicine—it’s about heart.
