#doDifferent on The WILD Side

Picture a field monitor tracking a pack of African Wild Dogs at first light, a snare removed just in time, a rhino calf given another chance because someone was watching. Now picture that same work being funded, in part, by your morning coffee, or the shirt on your back. It sounds unlikely - but it's exactly what's happening in Zululand, thanks to a small brand doing something rather wild.

Enter The WILD Collection, a lifestyle and apparel brand with conservation stitched into everything it makes. It isn't just selling coffee, clothing, and gifts - it's weaving a practical, everyday connection between the people who love wildlife and the people working to protect it.

Every great story starts somewhere modest, and The WILD Collection's began with a simple, practical problem: Wildlife ACT's field teams needed reliable, well-made uniforms for long days spent in the bush. At the same time, volunteers and supporters kept asking for something to take home with them - a keepsake that reflected their time in the field and their connection to the wildlife they'd helped monitor. From that need, The WILD Collection was born.

Fast-forward to today, and what started as a uniform solution has grown into a thoughtfully curated range spanning coffee, apparel, stationery, gifts, and lifestyle goods. The Wildlife ACT team is involved in the curation of every product, from early ideas and design through to sourcing, packing, and sharing each piece - with some items even lovingly handmade by the team and their supporters. Every product is inspired by nature and bush life in South Africa, shaped by the wild spaces Wildlife ACT works in and the species and stories encountered along the way.

"Conservation does not end when you leave the bush. Sometimes, it continues in the small, everyday things you carry with you."

The WILD Collection is run entirely by an all-female team of Wildlife ACT staff, who balance this passion project alongside their day-to-day roles at the NPO. Every decision, from packaging to product range, is made with intention - guided by a genuine belief in what the Collection represents and the difference it can make.

And that difference is significant: sixty percent of the Collection's profits are donated directly to Wildlife ACT, helping fund conservation programmes and support the people who carry out that work on the ground, every single day.

Wildlife ACT is a registered non-profit conservation organisation founded in 2008 in response to a simple but critical question: how can we protect what we do not understand? Since then, it has grown into a science-led conservation force delivering free, year-round wildlife monitoring across under-resourced protected areas in South Africa and the Seychelles.

Wildlife ACT's field teams generate the real-time data that informs management decisions, supports species recovery, and enables rapid response to threats like poaching, poisoning, snaring, and human-wildlife conflict. Their monitors are based in key reserves across KwaZulu-Natal - including Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, Manyoni Private Game Reserve, uMkhuze Game Reserve, and Somkhanda Game Reserve - protecting species such as the African Wild Dog, Cheetah, Black Rhino, Lion, Elephant, and Vulture.

It's a boots-on-the-ground approach: rigorous daily data collection combined with practical field intervention, close collaboration with conservation authorities, and long-term partnerships with local communities. It's guided by a simple ethos - Thriving Wildlife, Resilient Ecosystems, and Empowered People - and it's exactly what your morning coffee or new field shirt helps to fund.

The WILD Collection's range is built around three pillars, each one grounded and functional, with an aesthetic inspired by the conservation landscapes Wildlife ACT calls home.

Coffee. Responsibly sourced African coffee, roasted locally, with each blend linked to a species focus - turning an everyday ritual into a small act of conservation support. It's already served at establishments including Balam River Deck, Fugitive's Drift, and Underberg Country Club, with more venues welcome to get in touch and stock it themselves.

Apparel. Practical, field-inspired clothing designed for volunteers, adventurers, and anyone who wants a piece of wardrobe that's as comfortable in camp as it is at home - built for durability, comfort, and a strong connection to nature and conservation work.

Lifestyle. Thoughtfully designed accessories, stationery, and lifestyle goods, made to be useful and long-lasting, with a clear preference for local and handmade crafts wherever possible.

If you're heading out to volunteer with Wildlife ACT, you don't even need to wait - the team sends volunteers a catalogue when they book, and The WILD Collection is available to browse directly in camp.

You don't need to be in the bush to shop with purpose. The WILD Collection is available online through Local is Lekker ZA, with selected in-stock items shipped within South Africa while stocks last, and the team can also be found at local markets and pop-up events throughout the year. For custom orders, sizing questions, or to enquire about stocking the coffee range, you can reach the team directly at shop@wildlifeact.com.

By choosing The WILD Collection - whether it's a bag of coffee for your kitchen counter, a field shirt for your next trip, or a small handmade gift - you're putting real money behind real conservation work: the monitors tracking wild dogs at dawn, the rapid response teams responding to snares, and the communities being brought into the conservation story alongside the wildlife itself.

Together, let's choose differently. Let's buy things that carry a story worth telling, made with intention, and stitched through with purpose. Because a world where the coffee in your cup and the shirt on your back can help keep Africa's endangered species alive is absolutely the world we want to live in.
