#doDifferent to Rebuild

We have all seen the devastating effects of the unrest in South Africa over the past few weeks. As so often in the past, when we experience difficulty, it brings us together to rebuild and move forward. This time is no different. It is so inspiring to see the outpouring of support to help those in need, clean up those places rocked by looting, and begin to move on from this.

We want to shine a light on some companies choosing to #doDifferent and helping to rebuild.

FlySafair, the low-cost domestic airline, was one of the first to heed the call. When the main road freight and transport routes to KwaZulu Natal were blocked, they assisted charities and businesses in sending supplies to support the people affected. They also scheduled additional flights for those wanting to get out of Durban during the unrest. As one of the few local operators flying at the moment, their assistance was hugely impactful.

Once the roads were reopened there was a great need for transport of donations to those in need in KwaZulu Natal. Seeing this need Johannesburg based transport company Waterford Carriers offered its support to transport over 30 tonnes of urgent supplies such and food, medicines, and other essentials free of charge.

Demonstrating its commitment to the country, Volvo Trucks South Africa has donated R1.68 million to NGO Gift of the Givers to support their incredible ongoing work in assisting those in need in myriad different ways. Gift of the Givers were themselves victims of the looting which occurred in Johannesburg so this support will no doubt be transformative.

Finally, the Checkers group have launched their Act For Change fund which will help to assist communities in Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal to rebuild. The fund was launched with a R1 million donation by the company, and customers can donate at any Checkers, Shoprite or Usave supermarket.

In the face of adversity, South Africans continually show our resilience and spirit to work together to overcome our challenges and not be divided. The collaboration between communities, charities, and companies to assist those in need and kickstart efforts to rebuild following the unrest is proof of this. We all have a role to play, and every bit of support will make a huge difference to those devastated by these events.
