#doDifferent to Help Feed the Nation

There are many societal challenges that face South Africa, one of the major ones being hunger. With 55% of South Africans living below the breadline, it is imperative for companies, brands and everyday individuals to try to make a difference, no matter how small. That’s why, this week we are looking at a home-grown brand that wants to #doDifferent by contributing to communities across South Africa, helping to feed the nation and reduce their by-product waste at the same time - helping two causes at once.

Castle Lager, South Africa’s oldest beer, is 100% homegrown, brewed from only the highest quality materials sourced within our beloved country. In fact, there’s so much goodness in its local grains that huge amounts of protein and other nutrients are left behind even after the brewing process is complete. So they decided to start an initiative to utilise their by-products - something that would normally be seen as waste and would end up contributing to climate change - and transforming it into a nutritious means of feeding those in desperate need is an example of the kind of innovation it will take to solve hunger in South Africa.

Introducing “Bread of the Nation”, this first-of-its-kind initiative that forms part of the brand’s Better World Programme, which is a delicious bread baked using flour milled from high-quality spent grain - leftover after Castle Lager’s brewing process. The bread, which is made by a bakery company called The Health Food Company, is high in energy, fibre, and protein and will be distributed throughout South Africa in the communities most in need.

To optimise the distribution of this bread mix, Castle Lager has teamed up with a non-governmental food-rescue organisation and hunger relief SA Harvest, which will use its footprint and partnerships to distribute the bread. SA Harvest's mission is to end hunger in South Africa. Since their inception at the end of 2019, they have delivered 38.6 million meals by rescuing 11.6 million kilograms of food that would otherwise go to waste.

So the next time you are out at the pub with your friends, or relaxing at home with a cold one, why not try some of South Africa’s oldest beer which is leveraging their production process for the greater good - to fuel the everyday hard-working South African - to reshape and rebuild a better South Africa.
