#doDifferent to Get Through the Storm

This week we look at a Cape winery choosing to #doDifferent by throwing its weight behind a community intervention which is over 100 years old.

The story starts in the town of Robertson in the Western Cape of South Africa. In the wake of the great flu epidemic the community comes together to build an orphanage, Die Herberg, for all the children who lost parents to the disease. The children’s home still runs today caring for orphaned, neglected, abandoned or abused children of all ages.

In 2003, friends of Die Herberg suggested that a vineyard be planted on unused land belonging to the home. All materials and work to establish the 5-hectare vineyard was donated by the Robertson community. Maintenance, management and harvesting of the vineyard, as well as the winemaking knowledge, cellaring and all other production requirements is donated.

One of the local wine producers who are deeply involved in this intiative is Springfield Estate. They are one of the wineries offering cellar space, production facilities and expertise to the project. The resultant wine produced on behalf of Die Herberg is called Thunderchild – a reference to the natural wonder shown by the children of Die Herberg to fight through the most difficult of circumstances.

100% of the grapes for this wine are grown on Die Herberg's land and all the proceeds from the sale of the wine are donated to the children.

Not only is there a beautiful story and purpose behind this wine, but it is also expertly produced using ancient techniques and great care is taken to ensure the quality of the wine.

So, when you are next selecting a bottle of wine, why not #doDIfferent and make a choice that will benefit the lives of those children fighting for a chance at a better life.

Thunderchild wine is available at Woolworths or from the Springfield Estate website. Find out more here.
