Coding the Future to #doDifferent
At the heart of every thriving economy is innovation, and in today’s world, that innovation is written in code. Yet, for too long, the tech landscape in South Africa has faced a significant challenge: a massive gender gap. That’s where GirlCode steps in—a powerhouse NPO on a mission to ensure that every girl and woman has the opportunity to become a creator, not just a consumer, of technology.

Founded in 2014, GirlCode began as a simple but ambitious idea: a women-only hackathon. The goal was to address the inequality and unemployment crisis by providing a safe, empowering space for women to test their skills. What started as a weekend event has since evolved into a nationwide educational institution that has impacted over 4,900 girls and women.
GirlCode isn’t just teaching people how to build websites; they are cultivating a generation of problem-solvers. Their approach is holistic, moving from basic digital literacy to high-level career placement.

Here is how they are making a real-world impact:
GirlCoder Clubs: These volunteer-led clubs introduce primary and high school learners to the world of STEM in a fun, engaging way. It’s about sparking that initial curiosity that leads to a lifelong career.
Coding Bootcamps & Skills Acceleration: For unemployed graduates, GirlCode offers intensive accredited programs in high-demand fields like Python for Data Analysis, AI, and Cloud Computing.
GirlCode Talent: Closing the loop, their recruitment arm helps place graduates directly into tech companies, ensuring that the skills learned are translated into meaningful, sustainable livelihoods.
Annual Hackathons: Their flagship events continue to be a launchpad for many, offering the chance to solve real-life problems using technology while winning life-changing prizes like laptops and career mentorship.

The true measure of GirlCode’s success lies in the stories of the "GirlCoders" themselves. Take Carol Khoza, for instance. After participating in a GirlCode hackathon, she gained the confidence and technical skills to secure her role as a System Engineer. Or the hundreds of women who recently joined the AWS Cloud Practitioner challenge, earning international certifications that make them globally competitive.
For many of these women, GirlCode is more than an educational platform—it’s a "sisterhood." It’s a place where they can find mentors who look like them and peers who share their drive to change the status quo.
As a social enterprise, GirlCode relies on a community of supporters, volunteers, and partners to keep their programs accessible. Whether you’re a tech professional looking to mentor the next generation or a business looking to diversify your talent pipeline, there is a place for you in this story.

Want to get involved? Here’s how:
Volunteer: Share your wisdom as a mentor or help coordinate local initiatives.
Partner: Align your CSR goals with a project that offers measurable social impact.
Support: For as little as R75, you can help enroll a girl child in her very first coding lesson.
The digital economy is the future of South Africa, and thanks to GirlCode, that future is looking much more inclusive.
