Beyond Recycling to #doDifferent
We all have those forgotten treasures lurking in our wardrobes – that jacket you haven't worn in years, those jeans that no longer fit quite right, or the single sock that lost its partner. But what if these seemingly insignificant items could spark a powerful movement, transforming lives and nurturing our planet? In South Africa, that's exactly what Clothes to Good (CTG) is achieving, proving that every thread counts in building a more inclusive and sustainable future!

Clothes to Good isn't just about textile recycling; it's about weaving together a vibrant, value-centred, and green ecosystem that empowers people and protects our environment. With a motto of "We waste nothing, and everyone is welcome," CTG is passionately committed to alleviating poverty, championing the inclusion of people with disabilities, and taking incredible care of our precious planet.
They do this by transforming what's often considered "waste"—our pre-loved clothes, shoes, and textiles—into opportunities. Imagine hundreds of tons of fashion waste annually being recycled in South Africa, all while creating profound social impact!
Clothes to Good operates through three incredible core areas, each designed to maximise positive change. First, they focus on Empowering Micro-Businesses. CTG empowers women, especially mothers of children with disabilities, to become incredible entrepreneurs. Through financial literacy, sales training, and continuous mentorship, these women build thriving micro-businesses by selling recycled, pre-loved clothes. It's about dignity, independence, and a fresh start!

Second, they prioritise Inclusive Employment & Skills Development. This is where the magic of inclusion truly shines! CTG creates vital employment and skills development opportunities, particularly for people with disabilities. Programs like "OnRoute@Clothestogood" prepare individuals for integrated employment, offering work enrichment, skill development, and long-term support. They're also spreading awareness with disability workshops for businesses.
Finally, CTG is dedicated to Environmental Care & Resource Renewal. Every item donated helps reduce landfill waste and promotes a circular economy. CTG’s state-of-the-art recycling facility in Centurion processes collected textiles, sorting them for various streams—reuse, repair, upcycling, and more. It's a powerful statement against waste and for renewal!
One of CTG's truly inspiring initiatives is the 123ECD Programme. This Early Childhood Development program addresses the critical need for early stimulation in disadvantaged communities. Using a unique "123ECD Toolkit" featuring 50 educational activities made from recycled materials, designed by therapists, CTG helps caregivers in informal ECD centers empower children. These tools stimulate vital areas like gross motor skills, literacy, and social development, giving vulnerable children a stronger foundation for their future. The program also creates sustainable employment for people with disabilities who innovatively create these educational tools from recycled items!

Inspired to make a difference? Joining the Clothes to Good movement is easy and impactful! You can donate those items you no longer need; clear out your closets! Donate used clothes, shoes, bedding, and other textiles. You can drop them off at the Clothes to Good facility in Centurion or any H&M store nationwide. Businesses and schools can also collaborate with CTG to run recycling programs, generating funds for their own outreach projects. CTG also offers services like de-branding and upcycling for unwanted uniforms. And if you have time to spare, you can volunteer and lend your passion to support their incredible work.
By choosing to support Clothes to Good, you're not just recycling; you're investing in a more equitable, empowered, and sustainable South Africa. It’s an easy way to #doDifferent!
