Beyond the Clean to #doDifferent
In a country as vibrant and interconnected as South Africa, the true measure of success is often found in how we uplift one another. For many households, the heartbeat of daily life is maintained by the dedicated individuals who step through our front doors to care for our most personal spaces. While this industry has historically faced challenges with informal structures and inconsistent support, a new movement is shifting the narrative—turning a standard service into a powerful vehicle for social impact, dignity, and economic empowerment.

The concept of "home" is about more than just four walls; it’s about the people who make it run and the communities that support it. SweepSouth has become a household name not just for their convenient booking app, but for their deep-rooted commitment to changing the domestic services industry for the better.
Inspired by their "Do Good, Do Well" ethos, we’re looking at how this local success story is making a massive difference, one SweepStar at a time.
For many years, the domestic work sector in South Africa remained largely unchanged, often operating in the shadows with informal arrangements and inconsistent pay. SweepSouth set out to change that by introducing the term "SweepStar."

This isn't just a clever name; it represents a shift in attitude. By moving away from loaded terms like “maid” or “cleaner,” the platform highlights the professionalism and value of the people at the centre of their business.
Financial Empowerment: SweepStars earn up to 80% of the booking fee plus tips.
Breadwinners: 74% of SweepStars are the primary breadwinners in their households.
Employment Creation: 71% of the thousands of people on the platform were previously unemployed.
The SweepSouth Foundation was launched to provide a safety net for the community of SweepStars. It focuses on the "human" side of the business—recognizing that when someone has the tools to succeed, their entire family benefits.

Through the foundation and the platform, SweepStars gain access to:
Educational Opportunities: Information on government bursaries and NSFAS to help their children reach higher education.
Financial Support: Assistance with SASSA grants and relief funds, particularly crucial during the challenges of the last few years.
Mental Health & Wellness: Direct links to organisations like SADAG, ensuring that their team has the emotional support they need to thrive.
SweepSouth recently underwent a brand refresh, moving toward vibrant oranges and pinks—colors that reflect the warmth and energy of South Africa. Their new circular graphic pattern is inspired by the imbizo—the traditional South African gathering that emphasises unity and community.

It’s a beautiful reminder that every time you book a service, you’re not just getting a sparkling home; you’re participating in a cycle of empowerment that helps build a brighter future for South Africa.
Next time you need a helping hand around the house—whether it’s indoor cleaning, gardening, or even dog walking—remember that your choice can contribute to a larger story of dignity and growth.
