Beauty, Quality and #doDifferent

“They don’t make it like that anymore”. This catch-all phrase is so often repeated to describe the modern experience of quantity over quality. Clothes made to last only one season as part of an ever-changing ever-expanding wardrobe. Appliances made from flimsy materials which are barely up to the task for which they were designed. It’s not hard to see the impact of this kind of consumerism on the planet as well as our lives.

Increasing amounts of money are spent on ‘stuff’ to fill up space in our homes until it breaks or falls apart and is disposed of.

Fortunately, where there is a general trend, there are those who go against it.

Cape Town-based design brand aLoveSupreme are doing just that. Launched in 2014 as an offshoot of a graphic design agency, they produce an extensive range of stationery, lifestyle wear and homeware. Their products are fun and quirky yet maintain their absolute commitment to creating beautiful goods of impeccable quality. Designed to last. Furthermore, everything they sell is designed and produced in South Africa, supporting job creation.

aLoveSupreme have also taken a step to #doDifferent. They have teamed up with organic skincare producer O’live to create Hope Soap - A beautifully packaged organic soap. 100% of the proceeds from this initiative go to support Baphumelele Children's Home in Khayelitsha. Baphumelele provides shelter and early childhood care for vulnerable and orphaned children affected by chronic diseases and HIV/Aids.

So why not #doDifferent and choose to buy items which we can love – and will last – for years to come. Let’s choose quality over quantity. Let’s choose beautifully produced local goods. Let’s choose companies that strive to make a difference in the lives of others. aLoveSupreme is a great example of this.
